In 1987 I was first introduced to the idea of making a wish when the clock says 11:11. As sophomore in high school, I was somewhat taken with the sheer simplicity of four of the same number appearing on the clock at the exact same time. Whether or not any of my 11:11 wishes ever came true, I won’t reveal here, but I can tell you that I became enthralled with the number 11. Even though I couldn’t really understand it, I knew that there was something special about it. I even remember quite vividly the day that I announced that the ultimate date and moment in the future would be….November 11, 2011 at exactly 11:11 and 11 seconds. Or 11-11-11 at 11:11:11 (which was just this past Friday, and won’t occur again for another 100 years) Doing the math in my 16 year old mind, I realized, that in November of 2011, I would be turning …..(gasp) FORTY years old. The date seemed oh so far away in the future…24 years to be precise. And yet, here we are. And here I am-- writing this on the very last day of my 30s.
Over the years I’ve delved into the mysteries of the number eleven. Most recently I was struck by an article written by numerologist and poet, Helen Coleshill who explains some of the spiritual qualities of my favorite number. According to Coleshill:
The spiritual meaning of number eleven is quite diverse.
The number 11 is thought of as a "master" number in numerology because it is a double digit of the same number. When this occurs - the vibrational frequency of the prime number doubles in power. Meaning, the attributes of the Number One are doubled.
The very basic and primary understanding of the Number One is that of new beginnings and purity. When we see this digit doubled as with the 11 - then these attributes double in strength.
In numerology the number 11 represents:
- Higher ideals
- Invention
- Refinement
- Congruency
- Balance
- Fulfillment
- Vision
The 11 also carries a frequency of balance. It represents male and female equality. It contains both sun energy and moon energy simultaneously, yet holding them both in perspective 'separate-ness' and perfect balance.
Consequently, constant reoccurances of number 11 in our lives often signal us to be 'aware' of our balance:
- Balance emotion, thought and spirit
- Balance of masculine and feminine aspects
- Balance of work and play
Those who recognize the spiritual meaning of number Eleven in their lives are quite sensitive to vibrational frequencies matching these attributes above listed. Elevens appearing on a consistent bases is indicative of a reflective, thoughtful and intuitive soul, and number Eleven seems to present itself to people who appear to be very psychically connected. It is as if the Universe is sending a message of:
- Confirmation to maintain integrity
- Enter into an open space of conscious awareness
- Realign, reaffirm, re-establish (re-balance) ourselves
The spiritual meaning of number Eleven deals directly with our involvement with the progression of life. When it appears, it references both our ability to be objective and subjected to life events - it is how we enter through the doorway of choice that determines the purity of the outcome.
Of course in Judaism, we say that God is One. Adonai Echad. I’m not sure what Coleshill would say about that, but it is interesting to think about.
So on the eve of turning 40, I feel the balance in my life. I am content with who I am, where I am, and what I am. I feel blessed by my family, friends and community. And I will continue to make a wish when the clock strikes 11:11.
